String Climbing Robots

The Club entered two string climbers into a competition held at Plymouth University in May 2004. Jacob took first place and Nicholas took second. Congratulations to them both

Jacobs winning entry is pictured. Hopefully a picture of Nicholas's entry will be added soon.

Here's what Jacob thought of the event.

Technogames - Plymouth University

We spent several evenings building maze- following mice and string climbers to enter into the Plymouth University’s Technogames.

I entered a string climber and the rules were that the robot had to climb up a piece of cord about ten to twelve metres high, hit the top, then come all the way back down and then go back up to the starting point as quickly as possible.

The difficult things were: It had to be light, be able to grip the rope and to be able to switch direction. When we arrived at the competition, we had about one hour to make sure the robots worked.

We then watched the Lego football competition which was going on at the same time. The Lego football was run in a separate building at the University and was very interesting to watch. All the robots seemed to work well.

Then it was my turn. There were four entries but only two completed the challenge and my robot was the faster of the two.

Overall it was a great day and it was interesting to see other designs.
